I bought this raw edged Public Beware jacket recently, it's so inappropriate for winter, it is literally so thin. But I love it. Uni is exhausting but exciting, i have never been pushed this far in my life.

P.s nowadays i literally have no time to give a shit about my hair. its a quick disgusting bun and out the door. It will have to do for the next 3 years.

'Asos White' Trench Coat, Topshop jeans, Vintage shirt and H&m Bag

I was super excited when I heard about this award winning exhibition, and when I turned up I was not disappointed. The exhibition is scattered with seemingly useless and ordinary objects, but each one is attached with a story of a past relationship. A postcard, wedding album and bicycle are just a few that have been donated by people all across the world, items that contain memories, sad and happy, but shared amongst the viewers.

Humorous and sometimes quite emotional, these anecdotes were heartfelt and very personal. You stand there not knowing who these people were, but feeling all sorts of emotions for those that were in love and was left behind, and for those that were cheated.

Definitely a must see if you are in London, at £3.50 the tickets are so cheap. Go, go go!

These last couple of days have been filled with trying to catch up with my uni project. I spent it going to the library to scan, print images and getting fabric samples. We also saw some interesting university students work in the windows and inside of Biddle Sawyer Silks in Soho. Completely forgot to note down the name of the designer. My bad.

On the day of my library scouring, I found the artists Lucy McRae and Bart Hess's work. The last image was created using tights stuffed with sawdust and grass seed. I love these weird and interesting shapes created by such unlikely materials. Good stuff.

Also that is my friend Ben, he dresses cool.

Came back from Spain today after spending a week there with the boyfriend's family, was so lovely and miss the sun. Flights are so miserable and getting on the tube to go home was horrible. The crazy lady who sat next to me, when the carriage was practically empty kept on staring at me, which didn't make the journey any better.

Received my summer project for uni so going to be super busy with it from now on. Oh fun!

There's something about an abandoned building or derelict looking house that gets me going. I imagine the occupants previously and what they were like, and I wonder why the place has ended like it has.  You've might have seen the Kingston Lounge blog before, a friend introduced me to this site and it has kept me occupied for many hours...(cough)or maybe half an hour or so...(i get bored too easily.)

Anyways, I came across Hannah Blackmore, a London College of Communications graduate's documentary film 'Occupied'. Her film began when Hannah Blackmore noticed a light in a Tools shop that she'd once thought had been abandoned. 'It was actually open for business, and had been for the last  thirty years. As I entered the shop I couldn’t believe that there was an  elderly man and his dog sitting in an armchair amongst his tools."

Some glorious pictures taken in the Tools shop are on her website, its so worth a couple minutes of your time.

I love this fringed cardigan, it adds texture and movement to every outfit and makes me feel like a white swan. Its so totally cosy, but totally inappropriate for such sunny times, but i couldn't resist a sale bargain, spesh when im saving like £50! And gosh how I am loving this H&M bag, simple and droopy and with tremendous amount of space for all my useless shit I carry around with me.

Summer time is here and im spending my time learning to pattern cut (not enough time though) and working in a clothes shop. I'm being super lazy though and have been missing alot of exhibitions that I wanted to go and see and sample sales that I wanted to go to! Anyways I'm learning to create a pattern for a shirt I designed from scratch. Its getting easier to understand and I will show you my finished shirt when I'm done! woooo

My Foundation in Art and Design exhibition

Yesterday was the exhibition showcasing our work of our foundation course. It has been such an emotional ride as I was torn between choosing Graphic Design or Fashion Design for my future career. But I am so glad I chose Fashion. It feels right.

My garment was based on the theme 'Sexual Appeal and Imperfection' but i don't want to bore you with the details. The final garments I made was a white draped jersey dress and a digitally printed chiffon top. I created the design on illustrator and printed the design onto fabric, it was such a lovely feeling when the ink was transferring on the chiffon seeing as it took me forever to arrive at that stage. But I am so super pleased with the quality of the print. I have finally finished now and have learnt more than I ever thought I would. I have met some wonderful people and hope to stay in contact with them, I know they are going to make some serious movements in the future!

Today I attended the Westminster Graduate fashion show today, a show that I was excited to go to after hearing very good words about the University. A few of my friends will be doing a Fashion Design degree there next year, and it is kind of overwhelming to think that in three/four years time we'll all be showcasing our final collection to such a huge crowd. It is a scary thought, but so bloody exciting. I am so happy about getting in to Central Saint Martins and the thought of doing Fashion Design for the next three years is incredibly nerve-racking and so thrilling at the same time... which probably explains all the funny heart palpitations when I think about it. But anyways, before I go off topic... here are my favourite pieces from the show, however I feel that the Men's were slightly more exciting and to my taste, but all in all I am glad I went even though the thunder storm outside almost killed me.

Also! My Final major Project images will be posted after my exhibition for those who are interested. Although it doesn't look like I'm around, I am still regularly reading everyone's blog!

Things are finally coming together, I have finished making my draped dress and sublimation printed graphic top. Yesterday I finished doing the photoshoot and now editing photos etc and printing ready for the exhibition. Will reveal images soon, I am totally happy with the results and I am very thankful for the help during the shoot from the model, photographer and makeup artist. Foundation in art and design has almost ended! It's so emotional HA.

I have been neglecting my blog for such a long time! I'm super sorry, I actually can't help it as I have been incredibly busy with college work. I have good news, I found out maybe about a month ago that I have been accepted a place at Central Saint Martins for Fashion Design Womenswear! I can't believe it still and it won't hit me until I walk in the building as an official student!

I have 3 weeks left for my Final Major Project, where I need to get my arse into gear and start actually constructing my final design. So far I am unsure on which design to choose, and I will be digitally printing on fabric. It will cost me £20 a metre, which sucks but I'm hoping it would turn out kaboooom. The next 3 weeks is gonna be an actual nightmare...

P.s The bag I am wearing cost me £1 and it is like brand new! Ah I love when I find something that good for so low.

Also I have a job! Yay. 

PICK ME UP at the Somerset House

It feels really good to at last go to a graphic design exhibition... fashion design is taking over my life! For £5 you can wander around for hours looking at amazing contemporary graphic design, and how refreshing it is indeed. The exhibition is a working space, with open studios where the artists are sitting and working in front of your eyes allowing you to see the process as well as being able to interact with the artists you've just been admiring. I had a go at screen printing, and was talked through the process of it all which was lovely.

The exhibition also features the work by 'It's Nice That' and the 'Print Club London Collective' allowing you to purchase prints and art as they work. My favourites were Victo Ngai, Otecki and Annelie Carolstrom, brilliant illustrators whom I recommend you to check out.

It is possibly one of the most exciting graphic design exhibition I've been to. And as the designers work and produce more art, the walls that surround them become different everyday. So I'm sure I'll be there again in a week or two!

Yohji Yamamoto Exhibition V&A

For those who do not know, the lucky Londoners and visitors of the V&A now have the opportunity to see Yohji Yamamoto's garments up close and personal. And when I mean personal some people were touching the clothes (and I've already spotted stains I'm sure wasn't there before the exhibition). Of course having a grope at Yohji's garments would have been amazing, but I already got told off for sketching because of "congestion" reasons and I didn't want another earful thanks. Anyways...

What I loved about this exhibition was how it revealed his personal life, looking back at the start of his interest in fashion, with the influence of his seamstress mother, as well as showing his comedic side towards fashion. My favorite videos showcased was his A/W 1999 collection where gypsy bands dressed in Yohji's garments came waltzing down the catwalk in a joyful gait, and the A/W 2004 collection where the dancing British music band Madness made an appearance. I recommend those who can, to get down there before the July the 10th because all that loveliness is gonna go!

Blazer-Topman, Shoes- Office Bag-vintage Was on my to an exhibition on Kingsland Road, arrived and realised it doesn't open on Mondays. Only these sort of things happen to me.... ahhh. Will defo go visit on Friday, looks so cool from the outside. So went to Bricklane for some cheap bagels instead and caught up with my friend i haven't seen in ages. Was lovely.

Kind of a couple of days late, but I have been busy doing sketchbook work for my assessment in January. 2010 has been a great year, I think I have learned a lot about what I really want for myself and to take risks even though almost everything and everyone says otherwise. I have no new years resolutions this time round as I always forget what they are and I always write down ridiculous things like to "become majorly successful" when that probably won't happen in a year, and as you can see my life is evident of this.

I have been on holiday since last Friday and it has been ram packed with doing sketches and designs ready for my Portfolio assessment in January. It does not feel like a holiday doing this... at all. However I'm prepared to endure waking up, eating, working, working and working till I'm happy with what I have done. I have applied to Universities for a Fashion Design course and I am hoping and hoping for good responses.

Also I bought this oversized blanket like jacket thing I got from the charity shop where I work voluntarily. Although it looks amazingly warm, its actually flimsy, but my £2 Alpaca wool jumper seemed to do the trick. And the snow can eff off too, the soles of my shoes today had hardly any grip and i didn't want to be that person who gets laughed at falling on their face.

The brief was to make a accessory purely of household items that could potentially be seen on a catwalk. Here is a glimpse of what i have been making and developing for the past week... Necklace made out of spray painted lightbulbs and tiny screws stuck on one by one with super glue... it was long, tedious and at the end my fingers were fucked up from them sticking together and being yanked apart... it kinda hurt. 

Will be having a proper photoshoot with the necklace on Thursday so better pictures to come.

Thought I'd upload this picture because i look like an absolute giant... Also despite saying i was not going to choose fashion because of the bitchy industry at that time i had that shit experience, i was still drawn to the subject. And after some long hard thinking, i decided to take the fashion pathway. I kept on trying to put it off but something was telling me do it and so i listened to my gut instinct, and i hope this risk will pay off.  Although the picture above looks like nothing to do with fashion it will all become clear at the end up the week after making a paper garment. It's been 2 weeks in and I'm actually really enjoying it...yay! 

FUTURE BEAUTY: 30 YEARS OF JAPANESE FASHION

I went to the Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion at the Barbican a couple of weeks back and wrote a review for my University contextual studies. If you don't feel like reading something lengthy than you won't want to stay on this page for long...

As its the first exhibition in Europe to hold avant-garde Japanese fashion, from the early 1980s to present day, how could I miss such an event. With works from the couture visionaries such as Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto, these designers challenged Western forms of beauty, pushing the boundaries of convention.

The three pioneers of Japanese fashion deliberately avoided the use of colour, contrasting dramatically against the vibrancy of the designs in the 1980s. This was then adopted by Western designers such as Ann Demeulemeester and Martin Maison Margiela who continue to exercise ‘the power and versatility of black’ and the monochromatic palette. The vast difference between western and the Japanese catwalk shows was apparent. Rei Kawakubo’s first collection was described as ‘clothing worn by nuclear holocaust survivors.’ This idea of flawed and frayed garments celebrated Wabi-Sabi, a concept that ‘finds beauty in imperfection.’

The garments were further enhanced by the exhibition space of an amalgamation of clean lines and hanging diaphanous fabric that echoes the materials used in the garments itself. The fundamental designers contravene tailored and sculptured dress, a notion followed by Western culture and instead drapes the human form in loose fabric creating voluminous shapes and silhouettes. Kawakubo and Yamamoto rejects the trend of revealing the figure and embraces the concealment instead. Junya Watanabe A/W 2009-10 is an example of hiding the human form with a garment of billowing padded ankle length coat, emphasizing the hips with its exaggerated cocoon shape.

The pioneers of Japanese fashion has become synonymous with cutting-edge design and monochromatic palette. They started innovative shapes, deconstructing western ideas of fashion and working against the female body and instead celebrated whole new silhouettes.

A preview of the exhibition i went today at the Arts Gallery in Holborn showcasing a adult sized shoe box house. StudioXAG and University of the Arts London create a whimsical house with hand crafted fire place, floorboards and shutters with gigantic hands looming over, making you feel just for a second a little doll amongst the synthetic slices of cake, matchstick legged table and pinned up clouds. Super cute.

I've recently started University on a art foundation course. For those who don't know its a 1 year course before degree where you do a little bit of everything in art and design ie Graphics, Fashion and textiles, 3DD and lens based media before you choose which path to go. This week i have started fashion and textiles which im really enjoying although the workload is woah. But the task is pretty fun, we had to deconstruct a shirt and reconstruct it to make a new garment with the core pieces. Tomorrow will be the day i complete the alternative shirt which should be interesting because i still haven't made my mind up how its going to be. But here are a few designs i made this week.

Today i have come to realise that the fashion industry, after having a taster is hard, bitchy and ruthless. 

Bitchyness = success it seems. Let's hope that's not always the case. After a year deciding from fashion to graphic design i think i made my mind up. And although i know that the fashion industry isn't always like that, however my experiences in graphic design companies seem to be way more pleasant and relaxed. My sister (who is a graphic designer) said "TOLD YOU SO". Her friend who worked as a stylist assistant had left to work in graphics after experiencing the ogre that is fashion... Although i love fashion, the only way to avoid being spoken to as a lower ranked minion is not to be a lower ranked minion and become a full time bitch. 

(I do realise that its not always like this, so if you were about to say something along those lines, i already said it.)

Although people say to forget about tours and just immerse yourself in the culture, it is hard to when you feel quite intimidated on the first few days of such an exotic country. So we decided to take a very long 9 hour tour around Marrakech with a very informative tour guide. Considering it was Ramadan and food and drink was a no no through the day, our tour guide was lively and told jokes, speaking constantly translating from French to English. I admire those who were fasting as the heat can get unbearable at times, and feeling parched is a regular occurrence. Our tour guide told us that the very first day of Ramadan, the weather was at 40 something degrees and the day ended with queues outside Pharamacies for headache medicine. I would like to say i had a go at fasting, but temptation was too intense when there was lamb on the menu...  

The last day we headed back to the medina where we spent our time at the main square Jemaa El Fnaa, which roughly translates as 'Assembly of the dead' as it previously was a venue for executions with decapitated heads on spikes for public display. Despite the name, i can assure you there were no dead people... well not that i was aware of. Henna tattooist, snake charmers and dentists (where you can get your teeth pulled out right there and then) are situated on mats shaded by umbrellas. A glimpse of our amazing bedroom in the Riad. We had the whole place to ourselves with a lovely housekeeper. The little touches of the place was wonderful like straw hats scattered around the place, lanterns and beautifully crafted wooden doors. Ahhh i miss it :(

Wearing Allsaints dress that im in love with. When i first got it, it took 15 minutes trying to find out how to wear it because of all the fabric, but i think i got the hang of it :). Plus there is multiple ways of wearing it due to all of its material. There isn't a picture, but the back is lovely with a sheer panel going diagonal along the back.

Walking around the souks i came across THE bag, but as we were on a tour i ended up looking over my shoulder with remorse as it slowly slipped from my grasps. There were tonns of gorgeous leather backpacks and i haggled from 600 dirham to 200 dirham which is around £18, but then decided against it last minute as I'm getting slightly bored of backpacks...to the annoyance of the man.

However on the last day i swore i would buy a leather bag... how could i not since i was in Morocco with wonderful leather items everywhere. After a few minutes of browsing i had found the bag that i had regretted leaving, and couldn't wait to get it. The seller also tried to bump the price asking 600 dirham and after laying bare my obvious signs that it was far too expensive I got the price to 350 dirhams (around £25). However, I do think i could have got it for lower... but i am so pleased with my purchase.

I love how it looks unfinished and raw, where the cut is the natural shape of the leather. It is also hand stitched and feels wonderful, but still uncertain about the tooth... Yes i do have unusual taste in bags, im sorry i don't like LV you're just going to have to deal with it.

Marrakech

Arriving back to London was incredibly miserable, everything was cloudy and gloomy and the two annoying girls on the train back home who couldn't form a sentence without using the word 'like' made my journey to the city even worse. I miss Marrakech! We stayed for 5 nights in two beautiful hotels, the first place we had the pool right out side our door, which then leads to the terrace hiding us away from the hustle and bustle. It is true that 'there is nowhere so close to Europe that feels as foreign' (Time Out).

With the rest of the fabric i made a multiway dress by using knots to create different shapes. Experimenting with the knots and wraps, i ended up with around 5 different styles. Im quite happy with the result! I have a little more fabric left so im going to try and make a cowl neck top... wish me luck!

Shorts and vest, i love double white...

Received black jersey material last week and made a skirt... yeah it kinda went wrong. Loads of material left though, going to try and make something else and be a little more patient with it instead of stabbing at it with a stitch unpicker. Bad move.

Been shopping quite a bit in the last couple of weeks, and am very happy with my purchases! Have received the new camera and am going to Morocco on the 18th so loads more pictures to come!

And the photos in the previous post was done by an Iphone App called Plastic Bullet. I love the effects it makes. Definitely recommend this application!

But i bought 3 metres of black jersey fabric to play around with, and it should be arriving tomorrow. Planning on making a dress or a rip off Complex Geometries garment. Ahaha wish me luck. If all goes wrong i refuse to post any images of the wreck, although it would be quite funny to laugh at my failure.

Chelsea Palmer's laser cut invitations raises awareness of light pollution, encouraging people to turn their lights off. Once invites are put up to the light it imitates the stars, emphasizing the importance of not using electricity at unnecessary times.

This is the sort of advertisements that i like...fun and interactive... it isn't a flimsy bit of paper, its carefully thought through...this is what i admire about graphic design.

When i first saw the images of alcohol under the microscope taken by Michael Davidson from BevShot, i was hypnotized by the psychedelic patterns and colours and wondered what it would look like on a garment. I sketched out the figure and designed the dress, scanned then photoshopped one of the images (Rose wine) onto the dress...and this is the outcome. How cool would it be to own a dress with this print?! Michael Davidson is pretty genius. It just sucks that i wasn't that genius :(

I've recently started to draw again, doing pencil illustrations and fine line illustrations... but i'm not completely confident enough to post any up yet... all in good time of course. "Photolita" is showcasing a collection of photographs shunning the use of Photoshop, pulling you away from the screen and mouses to the constraints of the dark room. The exhibition is an "antidote" to the ease of digital use bringing back photography to its basics.

Although i am a fan of digital design, i can't help but love the rawness of a photograph that's been processed in a darkroom and untouched by computer software. Especially the photos taken of my Dad back in the 70s... i still have the camera...i really should use it more often... that reminds me i should develop my photos soon...

Operating under the radar, JR a street artist plasters humongous sized black and white photographs in the most conspicuous places. His anonymity allows him the freedom to literally place his art wherever he feels like it. He goes beyond the canvas of a train, wall or any old surface and takes his art and his innovation on a new level where no other street artist has, to the dangers and impoverished favelas of Rio, the slums of Kenya as well as humoring the disputes between Israel and Palestine. 

"It's about breaking down barriers, With humour, there is life."

The images above is on the project "Women are Heroes", where he draped 2000 square meters of rooftops with images of the eyes and faces of the women of Kibera. He transformed the fragility of the houses in to an art piece as well as showing practicality through the use of water resistant material for protection under harsh weather. 

"It's actually the women who are the ones holding the community together."

I especially love the second image of half of the faces plastered on the train and the bottom half on the slops so that when the train passes it lines up and the viewer is able to see the photographs in its full glory for that split second.

Super bad quality images, obviously i should have predicted that seeing i was taking the photos in front of the window with light pouring in.... hmmmmm... Wearing Hurwundeki dress, those shoes again with my other ebay purchase; cross earrings. Just simple silver ones i got also incredibly cheap at £1.50. I love ebay.

Every purchase i receive i always think about the person who previously owned it. It's kind of like the same feeling i get with vintage clothes, but instead i think "i hope it didn't belong to a dead person."

Armrock transfers his life-sized intricate drawings into urban contexts by gluing them on buildings and walls. His latest venture has been the use of a projector combining his drawings with light, transporting them from machinery to the urban environment.

This is the sort of street art that i admire.  

"I know that I deliberately have been reducing my use of colour in an attempt to reach some kind of greater directness in the simplicity. I have been trying to “reduce my vocabulary” sotospeak, finding that when I don’t shout so much people tend to listen more closely. Black and white are the greatest contrast, the greatest confrontation with weight, surface and line, and also the most accessible means, and I found that it was never just black and white. There is the basic colour of the paper that I work on, which changes with time and weather into different shades of yellow and brown, and then there are the colours of the surroundings, reality, a greater picture than I could ever paint. I mentioned earlier in the blog, quite ecstatically about discovering that KozynDan was exhibiting their work in London... the two LA-based illustrators and a husband-and-wife team, Dan and Kozue Kitchens. I absolutely had to go, seeing as i have admired their work for so long and longed to see it close up. Computer screens can never do art justice...especially of KozynDan's intricate and detailed work.

Dan: “We’re pretty mellow, accommodating people, so we don’t ever get too wrapped up in our own egos. Oh, and we can take sex breaks whenever we want.”

After walking 20 minutes or so along Old street munching on Japanese rice crackers, in the sweltering, sticky heat (it didn't quite help that i was wearing all black) we got to the lovely Nelly Duff gallery. Small, but packed with the wonderful works of KozynDan, I was so glad that they were exhibiting their panoramic pieces. There are so many more pictures i wanted to upload, but i didn't want to bombard you with them all. For those of you who live in London and wanted to go see, unfortunately the exhibition ended yesterday... sucks to be you!

A question asked on my stop motion animation post. To make myself appear on the pages i had to take photos of myself moving a little then taking a photo, moving a little more then taking another. Next i printed all the images out and cut them by hand using a scalpel knife... there was 300 images or so to cut. By the end my finger was bruised and aching whenever i bent it ahaha, but i suppose it was worth it... Next i placed one cut out image of me on the page, took a photo, placed another on the page so the result looked as though i was on the page moving about... i hope that answered your question!
